The Entombment

The icon of The Entombment, showing the agonized Virgin cradling her
dead son before he is laid in the tomb, is actually a portion of a larger 15 th
Century icon that hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This image is
painted by Trinity Icons Joseph Malham.
The icon is a particularly moving image, showing the tenderness of the
Virgin’s maternal love for her Son and her heartbreak in seeing the
prophecy come true that Simeon made when Christ was presented in the
Temple as a child. The swaddling cloths that enclose the dead Christ are
reminiscent of the way in which the Virgin wrapped her Son when he was
born, bringing the prophecy full circle from birth to death and then death to
Resurrection.
The image, reproduced on stretched canvas, is signed by Joseph Malham
and comes in two sizes. The Entombment is perfect for home, office,
church, rectory, school or the special place you have set aside in your
home for meditation and prayer.
