When Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle beatified Fulton J. Sheen in St. Louis on September 24, 2026 he not only advanced him on the path to sainthood but elevated one of the most popular and beloved American Catholics in history.
While Blessed Fulton Sheen was Bishop of Rochester, NY from 1966-1969 he was globally known as a charismatic and profound televangelist whose faith, intellect and wit cut across ethnic and denominational boundaries.
His television show, Lif is Worth Living, won him an Emmy and placed him among the titans of early television broadcasting. He moved easily among the glitterati of entertainment and the intelligentsia of academia along with the crowned heads of Europe. However, Bishop Sheen had a common touch of compassion for the poor and marginalized and had many missions to serve the sick and dying, especially in poor and emerging countries. A lion of evangelization and a titan in the realm of Catholic apologetics, he nevertheless retained something of the Midwest farm boy from El Paso, Illinois.
Joseph Malham of Trinity Icons has created a portrait of Bishop Sheen to commemorate his beatification. Done in the impressionistic style of his “Heroes”, the portrait shows Bishop Sheen in his cassock, magenta ferraiolo (cape), zucchetto (skullcap), and pectoral cross of a bishop. While a halo is reserved in iconography for those raised to sainthood, Blessed Fulton Sheen is shown with a golden ray illuminating his face from heaven.
This image, signed by artist Joseph Malham, is reproduced on stretched canvas, ready for hanging and comes in two sizes. It is perfect for home, office, school, rectory or church building.
