Christ the Healer
The icon of Christ the Healer was created during the Covid-19 pandemic by iconographer Joseph Malham as an offering for all those suffering, physically, emotionally and financially, from the pandemic as well as for those in the front lines putting their lives at risk in aiding the afflicted.
The icon is based upon the image of the Christ Pantocrator in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia and dates, possibly, from the 12th Century. The icon of Christ the Healer is free from all extraneous imagery and symbols and the intention is to allow the viewer the immediacy of gaze and contact with Christ, the Divine Physician who heals body and soul. Due to the lack of materials available during the pandemic, Malham created the image with found objects, including an old oak panel, acrylic paint instead of gesso and gold paint instead of gold leaf. It is presented with all the faults and blemishes, cracks, chips and holes, in order to more intensely convey a sense of our broken and wounded state during this time of pandemic and our desperate need of healing and mercy.
The icon of Christ the Healer is now being offered as a limited edition icon print, numbered and signed by iconographer Joseph Malham with a paper size of 17.25" x 11.25" and an image size of 10" x 13". It comes in an acid free matte sized to 16" x 20". The release size will be limited to a worldwide edition of 25000 and half the proceed will be donated to the Archdiocese of Chicago COVID-19 Relief Fund to support individuals and communities impacted by the crisis to meet basic, financial, and spiritual needs.
Each print will come with a 5"x7" card with the image of the icon on the front and a prayer to Christ the Healer written expressly for the icon by Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Mark Bartosic.
